During Bo Na’s eight years at Westminster, she has always taught as a single full-time orchestra director. But this year, for the first time, Bill Scruggs joins her as another orchestra director, having been lured by lunch.
Before becoming an Orchestra teacher, Scruggs practiced his musical skills by playing the cello at various events, including weddings and gigs. He also worked many interesting jobs, such as in an envelope factory and in industrial refrigeration. His passion for music, however, led him to a career in teaching orchestra. Scruggs has served as an orchestra director for thirteen years, most recently working at Peachtree Ridge High School for five years.
He has chosen to come to Westminster because of Na. Scruggs remarks, “She talked to me and said she wanted someone to work with and thought of me. ” Scruggs also loved the atmosphere of the campus and enjoyed the lunch.
Scruggs’s love for teaching and music comes from his positive experiences in his orchestra class as a child. He wants to help inspire a love of music in his students and help them be the best they can be.
So far, Scruggs has enjoyed his time at Westminster. “I’ve liked it a lot so far. Everyone is really friendly. In many places I’ve worked, people have said, ‘if you need help, I’m there’ but would never actually help, but at Westminster, it’s not been like that. Everyone wants to help and make sure I’m having a nice time. It’s been really nice,” he says.
The addition of Scruggs to the orchestra team signifies an exciting new chapter. With two orchestra directors, Scruggs and Na can split the workload and teach their students better.
His favorite part about the job is that every day is different; no two days are the same. In his free time, Scruggs reads, plays video games, coaches soccer, and spends time with his family.
