Reverend McCormick or “Rev” is the Chaplain and Director of Student Life, meaning she is in charge of Community Time and making sure students are safely having fun. She also teaches two Bible classes and leads the Bible Department.
Along with teaching she leads the Chapel Council leadership group, advises the Jewish affinity group, and is a part of multiple faculty and administration groups that meet weekly or monthly.
Due to her involvement in multiple groups, she has no concrete schedule. “Every day is different, for sure . . . I would say that there is a schedule that I’ve either created or adapted . . . my Google Calendar, I live on it,” she says. McCormick starts off the week with a Monday and Tuesday that she describes as “wall to wall, action packed.”
Monday
Usually arriving around 6:45–7:00, McCormick starts off her week meeting with the Communications team, working on the daily announcements and the WPU, and then before school she helps the class reps rehearse the Monday morning announcements in Oglesby. She then has a meeting with the Bible teachers.
Tuesday:
McCormick starts off Tuesday at 7:40 with a meeting with “the people that run the departments . . . called ‘the teacher team’ . . . we all meet before school.” After this she goes to the Leadership Team meeting, and then has her classes.
Wednesday:
Each Wednesday starts with the full faculty meeting and then Community Time. While McCormick oversees Community Time, she says that, “Ms. Lee is a big help.” Erin Lee is McCormick’s assistant and helps with the many projects she is involved in. “Then I meet with Ms. Lee . . . it’s an important meeting, she keeps me going.”
As a part of her Chaplain role, she meets on Wednesday with the Care Team, consisting of the counselors, the learning strategists, and the deans. She describes the meetings as, “talking about anyone who needs any care . . . somebody was in the hospital, somebody’s going through something . . . we talk about how to support them.”
Thursday:
McCormick’s favorite day of the week seems to be Thursday. “Thursday is the Jewish Affinity group I’m the advisor for. Thursday’s are pretty good. I have a class. In the afternoon I have the Leads meeting.” This meeting consists of Ms. Hankla, Ms. Reina, the Deans, and Ms. Little. McCormick says, “every single week we have a giant agenda.”
Friday:
Every other Friday the Chapel Council meets. Afterwards, she’s usually involved in Community Time, and she finishes the day with her classes. McCormick has some free time at the end of Fridays, and she has her own method for making that time—and any other free moment during the week—productive. “I do protect myself . . . Friday afternoon, I put WORK on my calendar. . . I do at least one hour of that everyday . . . and it just says “work,” because If I don’t do that then I will go from one thing to the next, and I have to breathe.”
Each day, McCormick generally leaves around 3:30–5:00. Some days she’ll attend swim classes after school and does her best to make them on time.
McCormick says, “I love my job, bottom line, like yeah some of that stuff mostly with adults gets stressful but I love it . . . I’m like five years from retirement, and I’m going to enjoy every minute of this because it’s a great job.”
