On September 10, 6th graders elected four girls and four boys to be class representatives out of 16 students that ran. In results announced on September 13, Hephzibah Akinmowo, Evelyn Conley, Ariella Boye, and Sophie Wehbi were chosen to represent the girls, while Alex Drucker, Jashen Patel, Keyan Bahrami, William Boice were chosen to represent the boys.
Sophie Wehbi and Jashen Patel wanted to become class representatives because they both want to help the school in different ways. Sophie says “I really think I can make Westminster an even better place,” while Jashen says “I want to be a class rep because I would like to help my class by planning activities and listening to them if they have any suggestions to improve our 6th grade.”
Drucker plans to improve certain parts of the Middle School, including “to make events more fun, improve lunches, etc.”
Conley believes that she can lead and is ready to listen. “I signed up to be a class rep because I think I could be an effective leader who can listen to the thoughts of the 6th grade girls,” she says.
Akinmowo thinks she has the qualities to excel as an excellent class representative. “Being [a] class representative requires lots of responsibility, leadership skills, and balance, and I have a lot of experience with that,” she says.
Class representatives have to represent the four core values and have many responsibilities in the Middle School: they run Monday Morning Meetings, take attendance and lead during group homerooms, make spotlights, plan activities, rally support for student activities, and make sure that the 6th grade voices are heard.
To become a class representative, students must first complete a leadership application, but unlike other leadership positions, they must also create a speech and present it to their peers. Afterwards, students go to their homerooms to vote. Although students can vote for any number of people, only four students from each gender are chosen.
Twelve 6th grade girls ran for class representative: Hephzibah Akinmowo, Emmaline Bailey, Ariella Boye, Evelyn Conley, Madeleine Gillespie, Veronica Gomez, Atrina Hajibaik, Maha Ishaqui, Jude Kazimi, Lily Shahriari, Milania Smith, Sophie Wehbi. Four 6th grade boys ran this year for class representative: Alex Drucker, Jashen Patel, Keyan Bahrami, William Boice.
