MayATL assignments will be announced to students via Schoology on Friday, February 27, between 5 and 6 pm, says MayATL coordinator Anne-Sophie Hankla.
Being almost halfway through the second semester, many Middle School students have almost entirely forgotten about MayATL registrations, which they filled out back in October of 2025. With the decisions being announced later than usual, students are left wondering when they will know their courses and why they took so long in the first place.
The main reason for this drastic delay is that students listed the same courses in their top five choices during registration.
With over 30 courses offered this year, some classes had too few students, and others too many. This issue led to entire MayATL classes having to be rearranged, extra teachers having to be assigned to courses, and some students not getting the courses that they wanted.
MayATL co-coordinator Gary Brown says the process was difficult. “This year, it really felt like we almost didn’t have enough courses, so it was hard to give everybody one of their preferences. We did it, but it just wasn’t easy.” Moreover, some courses also had too few or too many students, so they had to be rearranged completely. “Every time we move a student . . . [we] have to rearrange the whole thing. So that really takes the most time.”
According to Brown, the registrations are compiled into a computer program that matches each student to a course, taking both gender and grade into account. Then, the MayATL coordinators review each class and make sure that each student will feel their best in that course. If the coordinators decide to move anyone, they swap out certain students from other courses and move everyone around until they are presented with no issues. Finally, after completing final revisions with the grade chairs, they announce the courses to the Middle Schoolers.
During Spring Break, students can look forward to finally finding out what classes they are assigned to without the worry of not getting one of their top five choices.
