Morning recess will be extended by five minutes for the ‘26-’27 school year, administration has announced to faculty and class reps.
The Middle School will implement this change to make recess safer, allow people to enjoy recess more, and to give more free time to the teachers.
The 7th grade class reps—Zikora Perry, Aanya Desai, Jacey Zhou, Jada Salley, Zavien Umlani, Nicholas Jones, Colton Davis, and Aadiv Bhardwaj—heavily pushed for this change to take place, providing many compelling reasons for morning recess to be longer
Head of Middle School Leslie Ann Little thinks the new recess time is perfect for the Middle School. “We feel like the right size is 15 minutes. Because then you still have the five-minute class time change on either side that gives you a little minute here and a little minute there.”
The Middle School has a history of longer recess, but Little felt that when recess is too long it becomes problematic. “In the past we’ve had as much as 20 minutes.” Little says. “By the end of it, somebody’s either in tears or something’s broken. And sometimes that’s a human bone.”
In order to extend recess, Little says homeroom will begin next year at 8:10 as opposed to 8:15.
Little believes everyone in the Middle School agrees that this is a good change. “It’s one of those wonderful occasions where students and teachers were all on the same page.”
