This year, the swim team has been very successful, beating Sutton Middle School on Thursday, November 30, and placing highly at many other meets. The girls have been very strong, and the boys, despite being slightly shorthanded, have exceeded expectations and done very well this season.
The swim team is currently preparing for the championship at Marist on Saturday. 8th-grade student Declan Schuette admits that Marist has been a tough opponent so far. “The championship, I think is going to be very difficult to beat them. We lost to them at both duel meet and the Westminster Invitational,” he says. Despite this history, he has high hopes. “We’ve done very well. I’m very proud of how we’ve done this year, and I think we can continue to keep up that streak of excellence, and we do have a good chance of winning State.”
Hopefully, the team will do well at the championship meet after putting so much effort into this season to compensate for a lack of depth on the team. Coach Clara Jurczak says, “I think we’ve had a great swim season. One thing that’s made this year different from other years is that we’ve had an adequately strong group of committed team members who are dedicated to coming to practice consistently, and as a result, they’re seeing a lot of improvement and growth in their performance.”
The boys team so far has beaten some stiff competition, coming out on top against Paideia and Sutton, but unfortunately losing to McCallie, Marist, and Holy Innocents. The girls however, have had a more successful season, beating Marist, Holy Innocents, Paideia, and Sutton. They put up a good fight against Girl’s Prepatory School but fell short, taking their only loss thus far.
As the season comes to an end, Coach Allen feels passionate about the team. “It’s been a great bonding experience for them. They have worked so hard to get here.” It’s been awesome. The performance, the team members, everything. I’ve loved it.”
